At 94 years old, Kate Thurber is a beautiful example of what it means to age with purpose, joy, and with a supportive community. Since returning to Haywood County in 2016 after 66 years in Massachusetts, Kate has found a new sense of belonging through the Haywood County Senior Resource Center.

“I was born here in North Carolina, but I was away for 66 years,” Kate said. “Now that I’m back, my family is very impressed with all that is offered to seniors in Haywood County.”

For Kate, the Senior Resource Center has become more than a gathering place — it’s her connection to friends, learning, and laughter. She enjoys lunches at the Waynesville Congregate Nutrition Site, where she shares a table full of conversation and companionship.
