History Note: Leaders who Built Our Legacy

Here’s to the leaders who came before, and to the future we continue to build —together.

As Mountain Projects celebrates 60 years of service, we honor some of the leaders who helped shape our mission and guide us through decades of growth.

Pictured here are three of our former Executive Directors:

— George Carpenter, far right, (1967–1985), who led Mountain Projects from its earliest years and laid the foundation for programs that continue to serve our communities today.

— Sara Q. Brown (1985–1987), whose leadership built upon that foundation and expanded opportunities for families across Haywood and Jackson Counties.

— Bob Leatherwood, at left, (1988–1997), who carried the mission forward with dedication and vision during nearly a decade of service.

Together, their leadership represents more than 30 years of Mountain Projects history—and their work continues to ripple through the lives of thousands of families across Western North Carolina.
