Mountain Projects offers a broad range of services, from Head Start pre-K and affordable housing programs to senior resources and public transportation and many in between. We continue to develop and organize a range of new services related to our region’s unique challenges.

Programs and Services

Transportation Services

Haywood Public Transit provides direct transportation services to the general public and agencies of Haywood County. Handicapped accessible vehicles are available to any passenger.

Housing Assistance

Smoky Mountain Housing Partnership empowers essential workforce and economically disadvantaged families with the life-changing opportunity to become homeowners. The program aligns one-stop services, featuring holistic approach to the process and provides financial counseling, subsidized and “sweat equity” opportunities to make the dream of home ownership a reality. 

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program is designed to provide rental assistance to economically disadvantaged families in Haywood and Jackson Counties. The program seeks to ensure that families can obtain affordable, decent, safe and sanitary housing by inspecting each unit for compliance with HUD Housing Quality Standards. Families can also qualify to participate in the Economic Self Sufficiency program that helps participants save money and become economically self reliant. 

Our Housing Rehabilitation division exists to provide safe, clean and energy efficient housing for low income citizens of Haywood and Jackson Counties. This division operates a number of programs which address energy related improvements and home “rehab” measures.

The Food Services division provides the best nutritionally balanced meal possible to meet the needs of the elderly and the children served by Mountain Projects programs and others by contract.

Head Start

Head Start is a comprehensive child development program serving three and four year olds. This school-day program enables children from economically disadvantaged families to achieve social and educational competence and to assist families to achieve self-sufficiency.

Senior Services

Congregate Nutrition and Senior Center promotes the health and well being of the older adults through the provision of a nutritious meal five days a week at three sites in Haywood County.

In-Home Management Services assists individuals in Haywood County in maintaining self-sufficiency and improving the quality of life by providing basic home management tasks.

Senior Companion Services serve a dual purpose by providing part-time stipend volunteer community service opportunities for low income persons aged 60 and over who in turn provided one-on-one supportive services to adults with special needs in Jackson and Haywood Counties.

Haywood-Jackson Senior Volunteer Center promotes volunteerism and enhances volunteer services. The program recruits and places volunteers for all non-profit agencies throughout Haywood and Jackson Counties and coordinates special projects to fulfill community needs.

Foster Grandparents encourages those aged 55 and over to remain physically and mentally active and to enhance their self-esteem by participation in the needed community service of providing unconditional love and encouragement to children who have exceptional or special needs. A tax free stipend is paid to income eligible volunteers.

Health Insurance Assistance

Insurance Counselors serve the seven western counties of North Carolina to help people navigate the healthcare insurance application process.

Substance Abuse Prevention

Mountain Strong WNC/Western North Carolina Prevention Services is a program committed to the prevention of substance abuse. We serve the seven far Western NC Counties .Our mission is to increase resilience in our youth, families and communities through targeted efforts at reducing substance abuse and other risky behaviors. Prevention Services provide various prevention services including classes, presentations, resources, networking, and alternative activities. 

Circles of Hope, Cashiers/Glenville

Circles of Hope is committed to helping families get out of poverty and building new systems of support that will help individuals achieve economic stability. Circles of Hope of Cashiers/Glenville unties brings the experience of poverty into the hearts and minds of community members and leaders taking us one step further to a community commitment to poverty.
